Film Forum is treating you and a friend to the movies! From August 29 – September 5, students will receive 2 free passes for any movie at Film Forum when you purchase a $50 student membership. Student memberships afford you discounted tickets ($8 a ticket vs $14 for the regular price), invitations to special events, free popcorn on Monday nights, and a 20% discount on merchandise.
From now till September 13, Return of the Double Feature festival is showing 2 movies for the price of 1 (Member rate - $8; Reg. rate - $14) with a different double feature combo every day. During Hollywood’s Golden Age, your movie ticket usually entitled you to see an “A picture” (bigger stars, bigger budgets) paired with a “B picture” (lesser stars, smaller budgets). In the Golden Age of the Revival Theater, double features of classic films — often of equal merit — offered three to five hour marathons to hardened buffs, who could plunge hip deep into a director’s or an actor’s oeuvre or a genre or a theme.
Says Bruce Goldstein, Film Forum’s repertory program director, “Though most of the connections are obvious, we leave it to our audience to interpret them in their own way. Double features didn’t come into their own until the Depression, when two movies were offered along with a newsreel, cartoon, two-reel comedy, and sometimes a live stage show and free dishware. The two-for-one-policy remained an industry standard into the 1970s, with repertory theaters continuing the tradition into the 80s. But when rep houses started to die out, so did the double feature. Millennial moviegoers have missed all the fun.”
