What's News at NYU Kanbar Animation - July 2016

AIDAN TERRY (UGFTV 2016), who dazzled the Tisch Gala audience with his Virtual Reality dimensional drawings, has been hired by master animator Glen Keane (Beauty and the Beast; The Little Mermaid; Tarzan) as part of a six-person team animating a short independent animated film on Kobe Bryant's poem, "Dear Basketball." The hand-drawn project, which starts on August 1 through October, was produced by Bryant's production company Kobe Studios in collaboration with Believe Entertainment Group.  Music for "Dear Basketball" will be composed by John Williams.

ANDREW COATS (UGFTV 2004) and LOU HAMOU-LHADJ (UGFTV 2008), both currently artists at Pixar Studios, produced after-hours a short film, Borrowed Time, which won Best in Show at this year’s 43rdSIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival, the world’s largest annual event in computer graphics and interactive techniques. The SIGGRAPH win qualifies the film for Oscar consideration, but the film was already in contention thanks to earlier Oscar-qualifying wins at the St. Louis and Nashville film festivals.  Made over the course of five years, Borrowed Time tells the tale of a weathered sheriff grappling with past mistakes. Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) wrote and performed the film’s music.

JACK WEDGE (UGFTV 2019), was honored by the popular animation website Cartoon Brew, when it named Egg, Jack’s 8-minute short, the Pick of the Week (on June 27).  Egg, which was Jack’s project in Intro to Animation, was showcased in the NYU Kanbar Spring Animation Showcase.  Jack will be a sophomore in the fall.  http://www.cartoonbrew.com/cartoon-brew-pick/egg-jack-wedge-141078.html
